For the second half of the ARCS 200: Spatial Concepts and Precepts studio course, we were tasked with designing modular winter shelters for the estimated 2,000+ homeless and feral cats in Geneva, NY. The shelters needed to be inexpensive, modular/stackable, insulated, and easy enough to construct for someone with limited woodshop experience. In the first portion of the project, each student individually proposed 3 design concepts, and picked one idea to develop and present to our peers and a panel of judges. We then voted on 2 out of the 18 designs to produce at full scale and place at strategic points around the city of Geneva to best help cats in the harsh winter conditions of Upstate New York. We also created instructions to distribute around the community so that others could replicate the shelters if they would like to put one in their backyard.
